Poker Terms in the English Language
Poker has been around since the mid-eighteenth century. Originating from the Mississippi river region in the United States, this game quickly became a part of American frontier culture, and is now one of the most famous and widely-played card games in the world. In fact, it has become so popular, that poker terms have managed to find their way into colloquial English language.
For example, the term "blue chip" can refer to a stock market stock from a reputable and successful company, an athlete who is considered to have a lot of potential to be recruited into a professional or collegiate team, or an attractive man or woman. In poker though, chips are often used in place of money, and the chip with the highest value is often blue in color.
A person who has an ace up their sleeve or an ace in the hole is someone who has a hidden advantage against the competition. One of the things that almost all poker games share are hand and card rankings, and in most poker games, the ace is the highest ranking card. In a poker game, the last betting round is called a showdown, and during a showdown, all of the players who have managed to remain in the game show their hands so that the winning hand can be determined. In a poker game where the high hand is considered the winning hand; and having an ace in one's hand can often be the deciding factor on who wins the pot. While it may be considered morally reprehensible, it cannot be denied that cheating does occur in poker games, and one of the more popular ways to cheat in a game of poker was to have a concealed ace card.
When someone passes the buck, they are essentially passing on a task or a title to the next person in line for it. In more casual poker games, the responsibility of dealing out the cards rotates clockwise among the players. The designated dealer for a particular round often has a "dealer" button to indicate their role as dealer. This token is also frequently called a buck, and as the game progresses, the buck is passed around among the players. In poker games played in casinos, a dealer or casino employee is assigned to deal out the cards, but so that there is less confusion over the order of betting actions, a nominal dealer is assigned, and the buck is still passed around among players.
